SELF-PORTRAIT
Self-Portrait
The third cycle brings a noticeable calming of the earlier energy. The drawings are inspired by classical representations of the head known from ancient sculpture. Instead of a violent, expressive materiality, a more ordered modeling of form appears – the face is treated as a solid, constructed through light, shadow, and subtle tonal transitions. The self-portrait remains the starting point, yet the main subject becomes the observation of form and proportion, which were not always fully captured at this stage. It is a phase in which the search for expression gives way to a focused attention on the construction of the image.
